Everybody’s skin is different, and so it goes to say that everyone’s threshold for jewellery is also different. For those with sensitive skin, it may be best to stick with pure metal or filled jewellery. Unlike plated jewellery, these pieces are less likely to tarnish and wear down, exposing metals underneath that are more commonly the allergens. You can read up on the details between plated and filled jewellery below, but those with higher sensitivities or allergies are often best off with pure metals (gold and silver), filled jewellery, or surgical stainless steel in the case of earring posts.

Part of what we love about the pieces we carry is appreciating the art of hand-crafted items and the inherent element of being one of a kind. When products are made by hand and heart, each piece will have small variations in size, shape, and colour – and that’s exactly what we love about them. What you see in the product image is a representation of the product you will receive, but it is not an exact copy.

Some of the jewellery we carry is plated, and some of it is filled (e.g. gold-plated or gold-fill). Plated jewellery means that most of the product is a different type of metal, and only a very thin layer of the plated metal is coated on top. Gold filled jewellery means that while there is still a core metal of jeweller’s brass, there is a much thicker layer of gold on the exterior – legally, 5% of the weight must be in gold. The big difference is that plated metals are susceptible to tarnishing and scratches because there is such a thin layer. Filled jewellery is likely to maintain its shine for life. Since gold is a very soft metal, gold filled jewellery is more durable and maintains its shape due to its stronger core.
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver (lending to its other name, 925 silver). Sterling silver contains another metal alloy to give it increased strength, but also makes it more prone to tarnishing than pure silver. Sterling silver may also be used as a plated metal, which means the thin exterior layer is sterling silver, but the remainder of the product is another metal.

Daily wear, lotions, perfumes, and soaps all contribute to the longevity of your jewellery, but some pieces are affected more than others.
Gold-filled jewellery does not readily tarnish; however, if your jewellery becomes somewhat dirty through every day wear, you can wipe it with a non-abrasive cloth or gently wash it in mild soap and water.
Sterling silver eventually oxidizes but will stay shiny from frequent use. You can keep sterling silver shining by gently polishing it with a non-abrasive cloth. If it has begun to tarnish, use water with a phosphate-free soap. For tarnishing that is farther along, you may create a baking soda and water mix to polish the piece with before rinsing it in water.
Plated jewellery does tarnish and scratch. The best thing to do is to avoid contact with water that contains chlorine, detergents, or salt. Plated jewellery can be washed very gently with warm water to remove perspiration, with a mild soap if necessary. Do not rub or polish plated jewellery vigorously, you can remove some of the plating. While you may use a soft toothbrush to clean crevices, we don’t recommend using toothpaste – despite what you may read about toothpaste being a good cleaning agent, not all pastes are the same and some can be quite abrasive.
